What it is

This unit is supplied as item code CL, in AISI 430 or AISI 304, across 50pcs/bag. A hose clamp closes the joint between a flexible duct, a hose or a spigot, and it is the part that decides whether that joint leaks, collapses or comes apart when the fan starts. The range here covers the three mechanisms that cover almost every installation: the worm drive screw clamp, the quick-release band clamp with an automatic locking mechanism, and the band lock device known in Europe as a Jubilee or MONOFIL type.

The worm drive clamp is the workhorse: a band with a continuous worm thread and a screw housing, tightened with a screwdriver until the band diameter is smaller than the joint. The quick-release type locks automatically as the band is pushed onto the duct, which makes it the practical answer where the same joint is connected and disconnected during servicing. The MONOFIL and Jubilee style band lock grip without a threaded screw, using a friction lock on the band itself.

Material choice is the whole specification for a clamp. Galvanized steel is fine inside a dry plant room, stainless 304 is the standard for any duct that carries humid or salt-laden air, and 430 stainless is the cheaper stainless that works where the environment is mildly corrosive but not chloride-bearing.

How to choose the right one

  1. Size the clamp to the hose or duct outside diameter, not the nominal duct size — a clamp sized to the nominal will sit loose on the outside surface of the duct wall.
  2. Pick stainless 304 for anything that sees condensation, a kitchen extract canopy, a washroom riser or a coastal site. Galvanized in those places fails at the hole the screw punches through.
  3. For a joint that gets serviced, use the quick-release type rather than a worm drive: no tool, no re-tightening, no stripping of the band screw.
  4. For a permanently sealed joint on low pressure duct, the band lock device gives an even circumferential grip with no point load, which is easier to seal with tape or mastic.
  5. Where the duct is behind a ceiling and the joint will never be touched again, spend the money on the stainless clamp rather than the cheaper galvanized one.

Installation

  1. 1
Open the clamp and slide it back onto the hose or duct before connecting — fitting the clamp after the joint is closed is the most common site mistake.
  2. 2
Centralise the joint so the two ends butt together, then position the clamp over the overlap.
  3. 3
Tighten the worm drive until the band grips evenly all the way round; over-tightening on a thin-walled duct deforms the wall and makes the joint leak at the next bend.
  4. 4
Where the joint must be airtight, seal over the clamp with foil tape or mastic after tightening, and keep the clamp clear of the seal so you can still get at it for service.
  5. 5
On a vertical or high-vibration run, add a second clamp a short distance away rather than relying on one clamp to hold both the weight and the pressure.

Where it is used

Frequently asked questions

How do I pick the clamp size?
Measure the outside diameter of the hose or duct at the joint. Each product lists the size range it covers, and if your size falls between two listed ranges, take the next one up — a clamp that is slightly large can still be closed on a soft hose, but one that is slightly small will not grip.
Stainless 430 or 304?
430 is the lower-cost stainless and is fine for mildly corrosive indoor air. For kitchen extract, bathrooms, outdoor plant and anything near the sea, specify 304. The jump in price is much smaller than the jump in service life.
Is the quick-release type as secure as a worm drive?
It locks automatically by the band mechanism rather than by a screw, which is why it is chosen for serviceable joints. For a permanent, high-pressure or vertical joint, a worm drive with a secondary clamp is the safer specification.
Do you supply the clamp bands in bulk rolls?
Yes — band is supplied in rolls for high-volume installation, and clamps are packed in bags or boxes for trade supply. Retail packing is available for OEM orders.
Will the clamp fit my profile if I send a drawing?
Send the diameter, the wall thickness and the material and we will confirm the fit before quoting. Non-standard diameters are produced to order.
