What it is

This unit is supplied as item code AP-SMALL, AP-Medium, AP-Large, AP-XL, in Galvanized steel or stainless steel / 0.8MM-1.0mm. A rectangular access panel is the maintained opening in a duct, a wall or a ceiling that lets a service engineer reach the valve, the damper, the filter or the fitting that will need to be worked on. It is a small part that decides a large cost: without it, touching a damper means opening the ceiling and closing it again, and the closing is rarely as good as the opening.

The panels are pressed from galvanized or stainless steel at 0.8–1.0 mm with a recessed face and a locking catch, and they are supplied in four size classes. Because the cut-out in the duct has to be exact, the panel is specified from the clear opening needed to reach the fitting, plus whatever headroom the mechanic needs to work in.

How to choose the right one

  1. Size the panel from the clear opening the mechanic needs, not from the size of the fitting — a panel sized to the valve means a mechanic working with their elbows.
  2. Choose the material from the duct face: galvanized on normal ductwork, stainless where the panel sits on a stainless or a corrosive duct.
  3. Check the panel thickness against the duct gauge, so the cut edge does not need dressing after installation.
  4. Specify the lock to the access level needed; a panel in apublic corridor is a different security question from one in a plant room.

Installation

  1. 1
Mark the cut-out from the panel face and cut it with the smallest number of cuts you can — a ragged cut edge is not covered by any panel trim.
  2. 2
Fit the flange or the sealing tape to the cut edge before closing the panel so the duct lining is not pulled.
  3. 3
Close the panel, check the face sits flush with the duct or the ceiling line, then fit the catches.
  4. 4
Label the panel with what is behind it; an unlabelled access panel is a panel nobody uses.

Frequently asked questions

Which size do I need?
From the clear opening the mechanic needs to work in. Send the fitting location and the length of the valve or damper handle and we will confirm the panel class.
Galvanized or stainless?
Match the duct. A galvanized panel on a galvanized duct is the normal detail; on a stainless duct, use stainless so the fixings and the panel do not become a corrosion pair.
Can I get a non-standard size?
Yes — send the required opening and we will confirm the panel; non-standard panels are produced to order.
