In practice

A worm drive hose clamp looks like a simple band and a screw, and that simplicity is why it is specified by diameter and then left alone. The part that decides whether the joint holds is the screw housing: it has to be pressed onto the band tight enough that it cannot spin under torque, while the band has to be free enough to run through the perforations when the screw turns.

Manufacturing quality shows up in three places on the bench. The band edge should be free of burrs that cut the hose. The screw should turn through the full range without the housing riding up the band. And the band should hold its diameter at both ends of the size it covers — a clamp that only grips at the bottom of its range will let the joint weep as soon as the duct vibrates.

Common questions

How is the worm drive band made?
The band is formed from a coiled steel strip, perforated or slotted as it runs, then the worm housing is pressed onto one end and the screw is inserted. The band tension pulls the housing along the perforations, which is what closes the loop around the hose.
Why does the screw housing matter more than the band?
The housing carries the load. A housing that is pressed on lightly, or a screw that is not seated in the thread properly, is where a clamp lets go — the failure is almost always at the screw, not at the band.
What is checked before a batch is packed?
The band runs through its full range, the screw turns freely and the housing does not spin in the band, and the band diameter is measured at both ends of the size range. Anything that does not sit still in the hand gets rejected at this stage.
